2008/2009 Research Fund Awards

2008/2009 Emerald/CAPES Brazilian Management Research Fund Award

Emerald and CAPES library consortia (A Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superioris) offered a funding grant for a research project that would contribute to the development of management in Brazil. The funding grant of £2,500 (US $4,000 equivalent) was available for research that addressed the dissemination of knowledge for the social good with a specific focus towards the benefit of Brazil.

A great number of high-quality submissions were received, making the decision of the judgingpanel an extremely difficult one. Ultimately the panel selected the following winning proposal:

"Idea competitions for new product development: low-income consumers as a source of innovation?"

Prof. Dr. Aguinaldo dos Santos, Federal University of Paraná, Design & Sustainability Research Center
with the following research team:
Aline Krämer, PhD Candidate, Technische Universität München, TUM School of Management
Prof. Dr. Frank-Martin Belz, Technische Universität München, TUM School of Management

2009 Emerald/IACMR Chinese Management Research Fund Award
2009 Emerald Chinese LIS Research Fund Award
2009 Emerald Indian LIS Research Fund Award
2008 Emerald/AIMA Indian Management Research Fund Award
2008 Emerald/IACMR Chinese Management Research Fund Award
Emerald-ALCS Research Fund Award 2008: Public Sector Management in Africa
Emerald-ALCS Research Fund Award 2008: Engineering Research in Africa

The research project aims to tap the needs of low-income consumers and work together with them to develop products and services that suit their context. To this end, the group of researchers applied various market research methods in a pilot study, for which the project had the participation of the people of Águas Claras, a town in the metropolitan region of Curitiba. During a first phase of the pilot, the most urgent needs detected by the researchers were the expansion of living space. As a workaround, two guidelines were suggested: better organization of space and the inclusion of multifunctional products. With the aim to give low-income consumers a voice, the researchers gave them the opportunity to participate in the early stage of the product development process through an idea competition. With the research grant, the research team aims to continue working with low-income consumers to develop innovations for the so far rather untapped low-income market.

The award ceremony took place during the celebrations of the ninth anniversary of the Portal de Periódicos da Capes. The award was presented by Vice President of Emerald for the Americas, David Butler, to Gheysa Prado, a student of Prof. Dr. Aguinaldo dos Santos.

The funding grant will enable our international and interdisciplinary team to continue our research project that aims to put innovation theory in practice. We are extremely thankful to the judging panel for selecting our proposal and giving us this opportunity. Emerald and CAPES library consortia (A Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superioris) offerered a funding grant for a research project that would contribute to the development of library and information science in Brazil. The funding grant of £2,500 (US $4,000 equivalent) was available for research that addressed the dissemination of knowledge for the social good with a specific focus towards the benefit of Brazil.

A great number of high-quality submissions were received, making the decision of the judging panel an extremely difficult one. Ultimately the panel selected the following winning proposal:

"A publishing system to extract and represent the knowledge content of scientific articles on biomedical sciences in machine-processable format"

Prof. Carlos Henrique Marcondes, Information Science Department, UFF - Universidade Federal Fluminense
with the following research team:
Prof. Marília Alvarenga Rocha Mendonça, Information Science Department, UFF - Universidade Federal Fluminense
Luciana Reis Malheiros, doctoral student, Physiology and Pharmacology Department, UFF - Universidade Federal Fluminense
Leonardo Cruz da Costa, doctoral student, Computer Science Department, UFF - Universidade Federal Fluminense
Gabriela Veras de Moraes, student, Biomedicine graduate Course, Biomedical Institute, UFF - Universidade Federal Fluminense

The winning project, linked to the area of Knowledge Representation, aims to refine the search engines of the collections of libraries. The idea is to summarize the research problem that has been effectively resolved by a text or scientific article. You could say, for example, that the author X, Y in the article, showed that the substance causes the effect K Z. These summaries would allow the recovery of scientific information in a collection is not limited to the frequency of keywords, enabling an advanced search that included the findings attributed by the authors of the research index.

The award ceremony took place during the celebrations of the ninth anniversary of the Portal de Periódicos da Capes. The award was presented by Vice President of Emerald for the Americas, David Butler, to Leonardo Cruz, one of the co-authors and a member of the research group headed by Marcondes. "This is recognition of a five-year work and generated two doctoral theses. The group is very happy", commented Leonardo Cruz.

Similarly, Emerald will also offer a subscription to Chinese Management Studies, on the same terms.

Professor Marjorie Lyles, Head of the Research Committee at the IACMR, commented: "The winning project has two major strengths. First, it is on an extremely important topic since corruption poses such a difficult challenge for China and for the Chinese people and government. Corruption affects the perception of the whole country and impacts everyday life, investment, and trade in general. Second, the research methodology is innovative in terms of using court transcripts and of analyzing information on the internet. The researchers have demonstrated clear knowledge of the phenomenon and utilize interviews, content analysis, and laboratory experiments to study the different settings of information dissemination to find out the influence on perceived risks of detection. We expect the outcomes of this project will inform both practice and future research involving triangulation of methods. It is a worthwhile project to support and we look forward to seeing the outcomes from this research effort. The judges of the International Association for Chinese Management Research are pleased with the opportunity to contribute to the selection of this excellent proposal."

"We are honoured to receive the 2009 Emerald/IACMR Chinese Management Research Fund Award. Thanks to Emerald Group Publishing Limited and the IACMR for providing this fund and other convenience for researches like ours. Thanks for the reviewers’ careful work and comments. All this serves as encouragement as we continue our present work and seek to do better. The Center for Leadership Development and Research was founded in June 2008 at School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University. We try to do research that is significant - both academically and practically - and aim to promote a sustainable relationship between business and the whole society. The topic of corruption is one of the main research areas we focus on, and the one we have prioritized recently. This research fund marks a good start for our project in this area. We hope to further explore it and provide insights for policy-making and business practice in China and even more societies."

“For the last 2½ years we have been working at establishing a remedial program at Essubi Eppya Vocational Primary school, in rural Uganda. We have learned much as we have faced many challenges. As participants in this grant, we are very excited and especially thankful to God for the provision that it affords us in regards to training for our teachers. But ultimately, the impact that this training and the subsequent practices will have that can be taken back to the classroom as we expand our use and understanding of MEA's in the classroom, are what we are most grateful for! The Uganda schools curriculum will be impacted in a way that we have desired and hoped for in regards to utilizing cooperative learning and moving our instruction to being more student oriented. To the providers of the grant funds, saying thank you is not adequate but we trust the outcomes that will be experienced will be adequate thanks! Also, I would add to our testimonial that the Emerald award allows partners in Uganda to connect to a large international initiative involving the modeling approach to mathematics and engineering education, blended with work in virtual worlds and simulations. The award is leveraging significant involvement by East African partners in this initiative. We are enormously grateful to your company for this support.”
