Aims and Scope

The International Journal of Manpower (IJM) is a full refereed, double-blind interdisciplinary journal, concerned with the utilization, management and planning of human resources and the economics of labour markets, from a corporate, local, national and international perspective. The journal provides a forum for innovative thinking and the publication of important research findings, advancing knowledge in the field. It also publishes articles which have implications or relevance to policy makers and practitioners in relevant fields.

The field of human resource planning and labour economics is a complex one, influenced by the many social, technological and economic changes evident in the world today. The journal is an invaluable support to academics and researchers in the field, and to all those charged with setting policies and strategies relating to workforce issues.

The journal focusses on strongly empirical/analytical quantitative research. It regularly publishes guest-edited special issues of themes of contemporary importance. In depth reviews of current literature are welcomed.

Recent Special Issues

(Volume 39, Issue 8) - Guest Editors: Inmaculada Arnedillo-Sánchez, Martin Kahanec and Gabor Kismihok. This special issue results from the collaboration among a group of enthusiastic academics from the fields of labour economics, lifelong learning, human resource management, sociology of occupations and knowledge management, who in the early 2010s set out to explore how different disciplines measure, understand and explain mismatches in European labour markets and what avenues for better labour market matching they propose.

(Volume 39, Issue 4) - Guest Editors: Stijn Baert, Magnus Carlsson and Nick Drydakis. Ten articles are collected here which examine varying forms of discrimination in hiring practices; from photos to gender to marital status.

(Volume 38, Issue 8) - Guest Editor: Dr Abhishek Goel. This special issue provides an opportunity to look at work-family conflict studies from cultures that are different from the industrialized economies in the Anglo cluster defined by GLOBE studies.
